EFDA medicine registration

Register your medicines in Ethiopia with EFDA.

Every medicine sold in Ethiopia needs marketing authorisation from EFDA. We take your products through it end to end: pathway, dossier review, submission in eRIS through our licensed local agent, and follow-up until approval.

HealthTrade Data is independent of EFDA; submissions are made through a licensed local agent.

How it works

From dossier to approval, one team

You deal with one team from the first document to EFDA's decision.

  1. Step 1

    Pathway assessment

We look at your product and markets and pick the right EFDA route: full registration, the WHO-prequalified collaborative procedure for medicines, or the low-risk listing for eligible devices.

  2. Step 2

    Dossier review

We check your dossier against EFDA's current guideline and tell you exactly what is missing or needs reformatting before anything is submitted.

  3. Step 3

    Local agent

EFDA requires a local agent in Ethiopia. Your registration is filed by our licensed local agent under a written agency agreement.

  4. Step 4

    Submission in eRIS

The application goes in online through EFDA's eRIS portal, with the documents, samples if requested, and EFDA's fees.

  5. Step 5

    Queries to approval

We answer EFDA's queries with you and follow the file until the decision, keeping you updated at every step.

  6. Step 6

    After approval

Your product is listed as registered, so importers can apply for import permits. Our market data then shows you which Ethiopian companies to approach.

Who it's for

  • Manufacturers of finished medicines, vaccines and IV fluids
  • WHO-prequalified manufacturers (eligible for the collaborative procedure)
  • Exporters adding new molecules, strengths or dosage forms
  • Companies moving their registrations to a new local agent

What you provide

  • Product dossier in CTD format (administrative, quality, non-clinical and clinical parts)
  • GMP certificate for each manufacturing site
  • Certificate of pharmaceutical product (CPP) where available
  • Summary of product characteristics, labels and package leaflet
  • Letter of authorisation for the local agent
  • Samples and reference standards, only if EFDA asks

Registration routes for medicines

  • Full registration against EFDA's medicine registration guideline
  • Collaborative registration procedure for WHO-prequalified medicines, which relies on WHO's assessment
  • Special import permits for unregistered products in shortages or emergencies (importer-led, case by case)

Timing depends on the product class, your dossier and EFDA's review. We quote per product.

Before you register: see who already imports it

Registration is the ticket in; buyers are the business. Our market pages show how many Ethiopian companies import your medicine today, from which countries, and whether demand is growing.

Renewals and variations

A registration has to be renewed before it expires, and changes to the product, its labels, its manufacturing site or its local agent have to be notified to or approved by EFDA. We keep track of your renewal dates and prepare variation files, so your products stay on the market without gaps.

Questions

EFDA registration FAQ

Do I need a local agent to register products in Ethiopia?+

Yes. EFDA requires foreign manufacturers to act through a local agent or representative located in Ethiopia, under a written agency agreement. With our service, your registration is filed by our licensed local agent.

How long does EFDA registration take?+

It depends on the product class, the route, how complete your dossier is and EFDA's review workload, so any timeline is indicative. Answering EFDA's queries quickly is the biggest factor you control, and we tell you what to expect for your products before we start.

How much does the registration service cost?+

We quote per product after a first look at your product and dossier. EFDA's own fees are set by its fee regulation and are part of the quote, so you know the full cost before we start.

Can we change our local agent?+

Yes. Registrations can be moved to a new local agent; EFDA needs the manufacturer's authorisation for the new agent and the related paperwork. We handle the transfer with you.

What is eRIS?+

eRIS is EFDA's online regulatory information system, where registration applications, queries and approvals are handled. Your local agent files and follows your application there.

Is my product already registered in Ethiopia?+

EFDA publishes its registered products online. Our guide shows how to check, and we confirm it for you as part of the first assessment.

How long is a registration valid, and how is it renewed?+

Registrations are valid for a set period and must be renewed before they expire; changes to the product (variations) must be notified or approved in between. We track renewal dates and variations for the products we register.

After registration, how do we find importers or distributors?+

HealthTrade Data's market database shows every Ethiopian company importing your product category, how active they are and which suppliers they use today, so you can approach the right distributors as soon as you are registered.

Is HealthTrade Data part of EFDA?+

No. HealthTrade Data is an independent company. EFDA takes every registration decision; we prepare and follow your file, and submissions are made through a licensed local agent.

Does EFDA accept the CTD format?+

Yes. EFDA's medicine registration guideline asks for a CTD-style dossier with administrative, quality, non-clinical and clinical information. We check yours against the current guideline before submission.

What documents are required to register a medicine?+

A CTD dossier (administrative, quality, non-clinical and clinical parts), GMP evidence for each manufacturing site, a certificate of pharmaceutical product where available, product information and labels, and the local agent's authorisation. We check your set against EFDA's current guideline.

Is there a faster route for WHO-prequalified medicines?+

Yes. EFDA runs a collaborative registration procedure for WHO-prequalified medicines, which relies on WHO's assessment and is shorter than a full review.

Will EFDA inspect our manufacturing site?+

EFDA may inspect the site or rely on inspections by other authorities. We help you document your GMP status so the review is not held up.
